Lange 1 Moon Phase เรือนนี้ซื้อมาเมื่อไร และมาชอบรุ่นนี้ได้อย่างไรครับ
เรือนนี้ซื้อมาประมาณช่วงสิงหาถึงกันยาปีที่แล้ว เรือนนี้จริงๆ ผมเห็นมานานมากแล้ว ตั้งแต่ปี 2018 หรือ 2019 คือตามเพื่อนไปที่ร้าน Pendulum เขาไปดูเรือนอื่น จริงๆ ไม่เคยมองแบรนด์นี้เลยนะ เพราะรู้สึกว่าราคามันสูงแล้วตอนนั้นคือไม่อินกับนาฬิกาที่เป็นลักษณะพวกเดรสวอท์ช

ตอนแรกต้องมีเลือกไหม Lange 1 Moon Phase กับ Lange รุ่นอื่นๆ
ไม่เลือกครับ เพราะว่าจุดที่ชอบที่สุดคือมูนเฟส และที่ผมอาจจะแปลกนิดหนึ่งก็คือว่าที่ชอบจริงๆ กลับไม่ใช่ช่วงกลางคืนที่เขาชื่นชมกัน ผมชอบช่วงกลางวันที่มันเป็นเกรเดียนท์สีฟ้าแล้วไล่คล้ายๆ น้ำทะเล ผมรู้สึกว่าสวยมาก และก็ไม่มีมูนเฟสของแบรนด์อื่นที่ไล่ท้องฟ้าในลักษณะนี้ ถ้าถาม Lange 1 ถามว่าสวยไหม ผมว่าสวย ชอบเหมือนกัน และจริงๆ ราคามันก็ย่อมเยากว่าประมาณหนึ่ง แต่ถ้าซื้อแล้วก็คงไม่ใช่สิ่งที่เราอยากได้จริงๆ

ในฐานะที่คุณทำงานด้านการออกแบบ มีอะไรอยากชื่นชม Lange 1 Moon Phase รุ่นนี้เป็นพิเศษบ้าง
ผมว่าคนสายกราฟฟิกจำนวนมากชื่นชอบลักษณะของเบาเฮาส์ ซึ่งมันเรียกว่าน่าจะเป็นแก่นแท้ของการออกแบบ ไม่ใช่เฉพาะนาฬิกาหรือว่ากราฟฟิกนะ งานออกแบบผมกล้าพูดเลยว่าแทบจะทุกอย่างของเยอรมันนั้นมีรากฐานมาจากสกุลนี้ ซึ่งนาฬิกานี่ก็เหมือนกัน คือ สำหรับบางคนที่ชอบสวิสก็อาจจะมองว่ามันเป็นดีไซน์ที่ดูแข็งไปหน่อย ไม่มีความอ่อนช้อยเท่าไร สำหรับผม ผมรู้สึกว่ามันก็เป็นสไตล์อีกสไตล์หนึ่งที่ผมชอบ รู้สึกว่ามันมีการวางอะไรที่มันค่อนข้างเป๊ะมากกว่าของสวิส ตรงคือตรง ถ้าดูงานขัดเส้นเขาคมก็คือคมไปเลย ไม่มีการประนีประนอม มันก็เป็นเสน่ห์อีกแบบหนึ่งซึ่งผมว่านาฬิกาสวิสเองก็ให้ไม่ได้เหมือนกัน

หน้าปัดบอกเวลาแบบออฟเซ็นเตอร์ดูเวลายากไหมครับ
ถ้าพูดกันแบบตรงไปตรงมากันก็ดูยากกว่าธรรมดานะ แต่มันเป็นดีไซน์ที่ดูก็เท่ดี ผมรู้สึกว่าเขาฉลาดในการสามารถวางองค์ประกอบตั้งสาม สี่ ห้า หกอย่างแบบไม่สมมาตร แต่มันดูแล้วออกมาสมมาตรได้ เขาวางก้อนกลมใหญ่ ก้อนกลมเล็ก ไอ้ช่องสี่เหลี่ยมนี่ คือวางไว้คนละที่หมดเลย แต่พอออกมาดูภาพรวมแล้วน้ำหนักมันเยี่ยม นี่ผมว่ามันคือความเก่งของเขา

มาต่อกันที่เอาท์ไซส์เดทซึ่งเป็นอีกจุดขายหนึ่งของนาฬิการุ่นนี้กันบ้างครับ
เอาในแง่ฟังก์ชั่นก่อนแล้วกัน ผมว่ามันก็สะดวกดี คือเราหมุนเวลาไปปั๊บแล้วเราก็กดควิกเดทได้เลยตรงนี้ คืองานออกแบบของเยอรมันมันเป็นฟอร์มฟาลโลว์ฟังก์ชั่น ก็คือ เขามีปัญหาตั้งไว้ก่อน แล้วเขาก็หาวิธีแก้ปัญหา และวิธีแก้ปัญหานี้ไม่ใช่แค่แก้ปัญหาอย่างเดียว แต่ต้องเป็นการแก้ปัญหาที่มันออกมาดูแล้วสวยงามด้วย

เวลาใส่จริงรู้สึกว่าเล็กหรือใหญ่เกินไปหรือไม่
จริงๆ นาฬิกามัน 38.5 มม. ซึ่งข้อมือผมเป็นข้อมือที่เล็กมาก ข้อมือประมาณผู้หญิงเลยคือ 5.5 นิ้ว ถามว่าใหญ่ไปไหมสำหรับผมใหญ่ไปนิดหนึ่ง เพราะว่านาฬิกาเดรสวอท์ชสำหรับผมในอุดมคตินะ ผมรู้สึกว่าเวลาขึ้นข้อมือปั๊บมันควรจะเห็นสายเยอะหน่อย แต่อันนี้มันอาจจะเห็นน้อยไปนิดหนึ่งด้วยข้อมือของผมที่มันเล็ก แต่ด้วยความสวยและก็หลายๆ อย่างของมันทำให้ผมมองข้ามข้อจำกัดนี้ไป

ถ้าให้เปลี่ยนได้อย่างหนึ่งในนาฬิการุ่นนี้ จะเปลี่ยนอะไรครับ
คำถามนี้อยากตอบเลย เพราะว่าจริงๆ ก็ไม่ได้ชอบมันทุกอย่าง มันก็มีบางอย่างที่ติดอย่างเช่นด้านหลังที่เป็นธรีควอเตอร์เพลทที่มันปิดไปซะเยอะ ก็มีหลายคนที่ชื่นชมด้านหลังของนาฬิกาแบรนด์นี้ ซี่งสำหรับผม ผมไม่ได้ซื้อเพราะด้านหลังนะ ผมรู้สึกว่ามันปิดเยอะไปด้วยความที่เป็นธรีควอเตอร์เพลท ก็เข้าใจความเป็นเทรดิชั่นนอลของเขาว่าเขาเป็นอย่างนี้ แต่ว่ามันทำให้เราเห็นเครื่องตรงบาลานซ์วีลที่หมุนๆ แค่นั้นเอง ซึ่งถ้าอยากให้เปลี่ยนก็คงอยากให้ข้างหลังเขาเลาะบางส่วนทิ้งไปให้เห็นข้างในเยอะกว่านี้มั้งฮะ นี่คือจุดที่อยากเปลี่ยน แต่ในส่วนของหน้าปัด ผมไม่เปลี่ยนอะไรเลย ผมรู้สึกว่านี่คือมาสเตอร์พีซ

ความคุ้มค่าเมื่อเทียบกับราคาที่จ่ายไป เป็นอย่างไรครับ
ผมว่านาฬิกาถ้าราคาถึงระดับหนึ่ง ถ้าถามถึงความคุ้มค่าในลักษณะการใช้งานก็ไม่คุ้มทั้งนั้น ผมว่ามันเป็นความคุ้มค่าทางใจมากกว่านะ ผมมองว่าเหมือนเป็นภาพศิลปะชิ้นหนึ่งแล้วเรารู้สึกว่าเราอยากมีของอันนี้ในครอบครอง ซึ่งจริงๆ ผมก็ไม่ได้ใส่มันบ่อยนะ ใส่บ้าง แต่ไม่ได้แบบว่าเอามาใช้ทุกโอกาส เราก็มีหลายเรือนแล้วบางทีเราก็ใส่เวียน พูดตรงๆ ว่าในการแต่งตัวเรามันก็ไม่ได้เหมาะทุกๆ ครั้งกับการที่หยิบเรือนนี้มาใส่ เพราะฉะนั้นถ้าวัดความคุ้มค่าว่าผมต้องใช้ให้มันคุ้มนี่ไม่คุ้มแน่นอน แต่ถ้ามองว่ามันเป็นงานศิลปะที่อยู่บนข้อมือแล้วผมอยากเก็บมันไว้ รู้สึกว่าชีวิตนี้ต้องมีสักครั้งหนึ่ง มันก็คุ้ม

ถ้ามีคนมาขอคำแนะนำเพราะอยากได้รุ่นนี้จะบอกเขาว่า
ซื้อครับ อย่ารอ เพราะว่าราคามันขึ้นไวมาก ตอนที่ผมซื้อมันก็ขึ้นอีกแล้วฮะ อย่างของผมพอมีโอกาสปั๊บก็รีบเลย ทั้งๆ ที่จริงๆ ราคามันก็ต่างไปจากตอนที่เราอยากได้ตอนแรกเยอะเหมือนกัน แต่ก็ต้องทำใจ ก็เป็นกลไก มันก็เป็นอย่างนี้ ซื้อครับซื้อ เพราะไม่มีอะไรแทนมันได้จริงๆ

Chatnarong Jing is a Top Fan of our Facebook page who has consistently shared with us his opinions on the novelties we showcased. Therefore, it is only natural that we ask him to join us in this new series of review articles, as a lover of watches and a graphic professional – he designs fonts for a living. His latest purchase (at the time we approached him for the interview) is the A. Lange & Söhne Lange 1 Moon Phase in pink gold. We will now look at this particular timepiece through his trained eyes.

When did you buy this watch? And how did you come to know it in the first place?
I gotit around August or September last year. I’ve seen it a long time ago though, back in 2018 or 2019. I joined a friend on his visit to Pendulum to see another watch. Actually, I never thought of getting a Lange because of its high price. Besides, I wasn’t into dress watches yet.

Did you have to choose between this and other Lange models?
No. What I like best about this watch is its moon phase indicator. I may be somewhat different from other collectors who praise this watch for its nighttime sky display. I like its day time better for its blue gradient like the sea. I find this very fascinating. No other brand has a moon phase with this fine a gradient. If you ask me if Lange 1 is nice, I would say yes because I like it as well, and it is slightly more affordable as well. But it’s not what I truly wanted.

One praise in particular for the Lange 1 Moon Phase, as someone in the design field, please.
I think a lot of graphic professionals appreciate the Bauhaus style. You can say it is the core of German design, not only German watches or German graphic. I can say that almost every German design is rooted in this approach. People who like the Swiss may find this a little stiff or lacking in terms of grace. But for me, I feel that it is another style that I like. I find placement of things to be more exacting than the Swiss. Everything is so precise. A straight line is a straight line. If a polished stripe is meant to be sharp, then it is sharp. There is no compromise. And I think this is the kind of charm you don’t find in Swiss watches.

Is the off-centred dial more difficult to read?
If I have to be honest, yes, it is somewhat more difficult indeed, but it is an intriguing design. I think they are clever in their ability to place three, four, five, six elements asymmetrically in such a way that the ensemble looks symmetrical. The big circle, the small circle and the rectangles are set apart but the balance is spot on. I think this is where they have excelled.

What do you think of the outsized date? We are asking because it is another key selling point of the watch.
In terms of functionality, it is convenient. You set the time and you press here to quickset the date. German designs are on the form follows function basis. They bring up a problem and they find a way to solve it. This solution must not be only efficient but also eloquent.

Is it too small or too big on your wrist?
The watch itself is 38.5 mm but I have a very small wrist, like a lady’s wrist at 5.5”. Is it too big for me? Yes, a little. Ideally for me, a certain length of the strap must be visible when the watch is on my wrist. I don’t see enough of the strap on the Lange 1 Moon Phase due to my smaller wrist. But I can overlook this shortcoming because of its beauty and many other qualities.

What if you could change one thing about this watch? What would it be?
I am eager to answer this question because the truth is I didn’t like every single thing about the watch. There are some things that I don’t agree with like the three-quarter plate which I feel covers too much of the movement. There are a lot of people who appreciate the movement side of A. Lange & Söhne watches. But I didn’t buy mine because of movement aesthetics. I think the three-quarter plate covers too much of the movement. I know that it is their tradition, but what’s left to be seen now is the balance wheel. If there is one thing I can change about this watch, I would want to reduce the size of this plate so more of the internal parts can be seen. That’s what I want to change. But for the dial, I wouldn’t touch a thing. I think it is already a masterpiece.

Please rate the value for money you get from this watch.
When it comes to a price level, you don’t maximize the worth of the watch through usage. I think you must be in more for its sentimental worth. It’s like when you see a piece of art and you want to have it for yourself. Truth be told, I don’t wear this watch very often. I wear it sometimes but not for all occasions. There are a few watches I rotate through. And honestly, it’s not like my attire for every day is a good fit for this watch. So if value of money comes from actual wearing, then, no, it’s not worth the money for me. But if you look at it as a work of art on my wrist, that I want to cherish, that I want to own for once in my life, then yes. It is worth the money.

What if someone asks you for an advice on whether or not to buy this watch?
Just get it. Do not hesitate. Prices go up too quickly. It rose once more when I got it. So when I had the chance, I decided to take the plunge despite the watch being much more expensive than when I first discovered it. This is the way the market works and you must learn to deal with it. So just buy it. There really is no substitute.
