NEW CONCORD — A person is in custody after a shooting on Friday evening at Muskingum University, according to Muskingum County Sheriff Matt Lutz and a spokesperson from the university.
Lutz said there was one victim, later identified by the university as a player with the visiting Olivet College baseball team, who was shot multiple times. Little information was immediately available, including the status of the victim, as Lutz said more information was currently being gathered.
The shooting happened just after 7 p.m. and occurred at the North Turf, just north of Mose Morehead Field, according to a release from the university, which put a shelter in place in effect immediately after getting the call at 7:23 p.m..
No harm occurred to faculty, staff and students, they said. The shelter in place was lifted at 9:15 p.m. after the potential suspect was taken into custody.
Lutz said the name of the person is custody has not been released or officially been ruled a suspect, as authorities were still trying to determine a positive identification just after 8 o’clock.
Jennifer Shaver, Muskingum Executive Director of Strategic Marketing and Communication, said in an 11 p.m. press release that the victim was transported to a local hospital, where he is currently being treated.
First responders from the New Concord Police Department and Muskingum University Police assisted with the Sheriff’s Office in searching for a suspect, based on witness descriptions, she said.
