CEO Hwang Joo-ho of Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power (KHNP) gave a keynote speech on the theme of “sustainable economic changes” in Africa through nuclear power in the Africa Nuclear Business Platform Conference 2023 held in Kampala, Uganda, on March 15 (local time).

The Ugandan government hosted the event. President Hwang attended the conference at the invitation of the Uganda Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development. The conference began with a keynote speech by President Hwang Joo-ho with the attendance of Ugandan President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, Ugandan Prime Minister Nabbanja Robinah, and Ugandan Energy and Mineral Development Minister Ruth Nankabirwa Ssentamu. The event attracted about 300 people, including officials from several African governments, nuclear regulatory agencies, and companies in Uganda, Rwanda, Nigeria, Kenya, Senegal, Ghana, Ethiopia, Sudan, and Tanzania.

In his keynote speech, Hwang expressed his aspirations, saying, “Through cooperation with Africa, we will do our best to contribute to the supply of low-carbon energy which will be a future growth driver for Africa by providing Korean nuclear power plant and smart nuclear power technology.”

On the same day, KHNP signed a memorandum of understanding on nuclear cooperation with the Ugandan Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development. Under the agreement, KHNP will support Uganda’s nuclear human resources development, and the two organizations will cooperate closely in the fields of the design, construction, and operation of nuclear power plants.

At the two-day conference held on March 15 and 16, the two sides had discussions on an increase in energy demand in Africa, responses to climate change, a need for nuclear power energy for carbon neutrality, ways to cooperate in the nuclear power plant sector, and cases of countries which built nuclear power plants, such as Korea.
