Hyundai Mobis has developed an electrification system that maximizes power performance by attaching a drive motor to each wheel and provides optimal driving performance with independent wheel control.

Hyundai Mobis announced on March 19 that it had succeeded in developing a four-wheel independent driving in-wheel system in which motors directly control each wheel of a vehicle. The in-wheel system is a new technology that has not yet been mass-produced in the world. Hyundai Mobis is conducting work to verify the in-wheel system’s reliability for its mass-production with Hyundai Motor Company.

The “In-wheel system” concept is the idea of putting an electric vehicle’s powertrain in the wheels of a vehicle, but the design process is not easy. It is evaluated as a technology with many problems to be addressed related to power performance and durability.

The main features of an in-wheel system are an improvement in power efficiency and fuel efficiency, an increase in cruising distances, an improvement in driving performance, and unique driving vectors that no other vehicle can have. When an in-wheel system is installed in a vehicle, power transmission parts such as a drive shaft are not required. This can maximize driving efficiency and boost fuel efficiency.

The core technology of an IONIQ 5-based e-corner system, which Hyundai Mobis introduced at CES 2023 earlier this year. The e-corner system is an integrated solution that integrates electronic steering, braking, and suspension technologies around the in-wheel, which is an important car component. Hyundai Mobis is currently developing an e-corner system for actual vehicles and aims to complete its development within the next five years.
