The College of Southern Nevada (CSN) is making headlines with one of its newest programs, a group of certification courses in the cannabis industry. The program covers everything from growing and cultivating the plant to marketing it and selling it.

As Nevada’s legal industry continues to grow, there is more and more need for folks to be trained to work and contribute. For the program, the college is working with a cannabis education provider called Green Flower who specialize in connecting students to the industry. The school is offering certificate programs for advanced dispensary associates, advanced manufacturing agents, and advanced cultivation technicians.

Each program will dive into the basics of cannabis compliance, and then break into more specific topics relevant to the focus of the program’s curriculum.

The Manufacturing Agent program dives into infused products like edibles and producing concentrates. Those in the program will study the business of cannabis extraction, product development, formulation and plant ensemble, extraction processes and principles, product safety, packaging and labeling, pest control, product testing, storage, and more.

The Advanced Cultivation technicians will learn about growing and botany. Students will study the business of cannabis cultivation, botany and genetics of the cannabis plant, seeds, germination, cloning, light sources, pests, disease and threat management, irrigation, product safety, packaging and labeling, storage, and more.

The Dispensary Associate Program will prepare students for sales jobs. Those in the program will look further into the history and botany of the cannabis plant, cannabinoids, terpenes, and the Endocannabinoid System, as well as health and safety training, best security procedures, inventory tracking, the importance of documentation and recordkeeping, and product safety.

Each program is eight weeks long and can be completed online, making it easy to balance for those already working in the industry or working while in school. Students can enroll any time, and courses are $750 each. Those who graduate receive a Credly badge and will gain access to the network of hiring businesses provided by Green Flower.

The school’s website explains, “Cannabis skills are in demand. The cannabis industry is creating thousands of exciting career opportunities yet a significant shortage of qualified professionals exists. Now you can gain the job skills you need to succeed in this fast-evolving industry.

“As the cannabis industry expands, the demand for skilled and credible professionals expands with it. Becoming an expert in this field means learning from the pioneers who are taking the industry into the mainstream. These programs develop focused, in-depth knowledge for those interested in a career in cannabis.”

CSN boasts being the “largest and most ethnically diverse” college in Nevada, and one that prioritizes offering degrees and certificates in person or online so that students have a chance to learn and gain opportunities at a pace and in a way that works for them.

The school’s website explains, “The College of Southern Nevada’s Division of Workforce & Economic Development was established in 2005 to meet the training needs of Southern Nevada’s workforce and employers. The Division is an entrepreneurial and self-supporting arm of CSN that works with the region’s business and key industry sectors in the assessment, design and implementation of customized curricula and training programs. It also provides services to students, employers, employees and adult learners seeking education opportunities, new skills and career advancement.

This is certainly not the first program of its kind to launch across the country as the cannabis industry spreads to more and more legal states. As job opportunities increase in these fields, programs to train folks to work in all aspects of the cannabis industry are becoming more and more common.
