It’s a big year for Willie Nelson, although it’s hard to look at the Texas troubadour’s resume of nearly a hundred studio albums, fifty-six Grammy nominations, and a constantly bustling tour schedule and conclude that he’s ever taken it slow.
In April, the Red Headed Stranger will celebrate his ninetieth birthday with a superstar-studded two-day California concert that includes appearances by Kacey Musgraves, Leon Bridges, Lyle Lovett, Miranda Lambert, the Avett Brothers, Snoop Dogg, and many more.
This March, he’ll also release a new studio album—his ninety-eighth—called I Don’t Know a Thing About Love. It’s a tribute to Harlan Howard, the late Country Music- and Nashville Songwriters Hall of Famer, who famously noted that the ingredients for country music were simply “three chords and the truth.” Howard penned an astounding four thousand tunes during his lifetime for the likes of Waylon Jennings, Ray Charles, Dolly Parton, Burl Ives, George Jones, Patty Loveless, and Marty Stuart (to name a few), and now Nelson lends his voice to ten of his friend’s classic songs.
Garden & Gun is proud to premiere Nelson’s buoyant take on “Tiger by the Tail,” which Howard co-wrote with Buck Owens, whose version hit number one on the country charts in 1965.
