For the fifth year in a row, the Japanese passport was ranked the world’s strongest passport in 2022.

Using data from the International Air Transport Association for its measurements, the Henley Passport Index found that Japanese citizens can visit 193 out of 227 destinations without a visa, encompassing 85% of the world.

The New Zealand passport remained in seventh place, alongside Belgium, the Czech Republic, Norway, Switzerland and the United States, granting Kiwis visa-free access to 186 countries.

Singapore dropped from joint first to join South Korea in second place, with Germany and Spain following close behind.

At the bottom of the Henley Passport ranking is Afghanistan, which holds a score of 27.

The index concluded its findings by stating that there appears to be a direct link between passport strength and economic power. It also found that the war in Ukraine had not resulted in much movement for Ukraine or Russia in its ranking.
