Hyundai Motor Group was ranked sixth in global electric vehicle (EV) sales in 2022
The number of EVs registered worldwide stood at 10.83 million units in 2022, chalking up a 61.3 percent increase from 6.71 million in the previous year, SNE Research said on Feb. 13. The figure is the sum of battery electric vehicles (BEVs) and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs).
First place went to China’s BYD, which sold 1.87 million units, an increase of 204.6 percent compared to 2021. BYD was followed by Tesla with 1.31 million units, an increase of 40 percent, and SAIC with 978,000 units, up 43.1 percent.
Fourth place was taken by Germany’s Volkswagen, which sold 815,000 units and a slow growth rate of 8.8 percent. China’s Geely landed at fifth place by selling 646,000 units, up 111.8 percent. Hyundai Motor Group (Hyundai Motor Co. and Kia Corp.) delivered 510,000 units, up 40.9 percent from 2021, nabbing sixth place
Last year, EV sales ascended by 97.1 percent to 6.56 million units in China, compared to an 11.2 percent increase in Europe and a 49.8 percent increase in North America.
This year, electric vehicle delivery volume in the global market is projected to reach 14.78 million units. “While the growth of the Chinese electric vehicle market in 2023 is expected to slow down slightly compared to the previous year, attention is focusing on what changes the enactment of the US Inflation Prevention Act (IRA) will bring to the electric vehicle market,” SNE Research said.
Meanwhile, Hyundai Motor Group has crossed 100,000 units in cumulative sales in the U.S. market since it began to sell EVs in the market. The group’s three brands (Hyundai, Genesis, and Kia) started selling EVs in the United States in October 2014. Their cumulative sales volume reached 104,326 units in January 2023.
By brand, Kia sold a total of 51,266 units, Hyundai Motor 51,096 units and the Genesis 1,964 units.
