It all started with a classic Hill Country family ranch. Long before Camp Lucy was an internationally recognized wine country resort and acclaimed wedding venue in Drippings Springs, Texas, it was a country home for Whit Hanks, whose parents purchased the land in 1985. It might have stayed that way, too, had Hanks’s son not traveled to Vietnam and uncovered an architectural wonder his antique dealer father couldn’t resist: a nineteenth-century Catholic church slated for demolition. Call it foreshadowing or mere folly—Hanks had to save it, and he ordered the building to be disassembled, shipped, and rebuilt at Camp Lucy, piece by piece.

Again, that might have been the end of it had a local event planner not gotten wind of the building and persuaded Hanks to start hosting weddings on his unique property. One ceremony turned into fifty-eight that first year in 2010, and before long, the new business partners were preparing to become life partners with their own wedding. Today Whit and Kim Hanks oversee a one-of-a-kind luxury experience on a site with architectural details salvaged from across the globe: a restaurant housed inside a repurposed town hall from the Ninh Binh region of North Vietnam, an events hall built into an 1800s Amish barn, and a pavilion crafted from reclaimed ironwood and tiles from the original courthouse in Bexar County, Texas.

From this vantage point an hour outside of Austin, guests can also enjoy thirty-two nearby wineries, distilleries, and breweries along with the traditional on-site camp activities, including archery, hatchet throwing, and hiking. Suffice to say, it’s hard to imagine a more exciting camp to write home about.
