Brightwell

Just last week on 22 March, the former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson appeared on television for cross-examination by the privileges committee over the Partygate scandal which the politician was said to be misleading parliament. While he is under the scrutiny of the country, that hasn’t stopped him from finding a new place to stay. Johnson is in the process of acquiring a 400-year-old mansion to his property portfolio for £3.8 million.

The historic estate is located in Oxfordshire and a moated castle is believed to have been built on the land by King Stephen in the 1150s while the house dates back to 1605s. According to the listing agency The Country House Department, the sale was expecting “offers in excess of £4 million”. In total, the property features nine bedrooms with a guest cottage and other luxuriant amenities.

Called Brightwell Manor, the building is officially a Grade II historic listing and records of the house put it as the tallest in the area during its time. Listing agent Andrew Russell shared that it was “not good form to build a house that was taller than the local church”, and to solve this problem the family that bought the property added a red brick tower to the church so that it just reaches the height of the manor.

Standing on about 5 acres of land, the entire property has a combined area of about 9,328 square feet with the main house occupying 8,128 square feet while the one-bedroom guest cottage is 1,200 square feet. The building is a mix of Georgian and Tudor styles with the listing agent sharing that its Georgian aesthetics only came about in the late 18th century as seen by the red brick facade.

Continuing around the property is a walled garden, a large pond, several fruit trees including a chestnut tree taken from a conker from Windsor’s Royal Mile and other fruit trees. There are stables and a double garage for storage.

Just like the exterior, the property’s interior is filled with period charms. From the high ceiling, open fireplaces, large windows, wood panelling, ornate cornices and flagstone floor, it is as though time stood still in this space. In the main house, it boasts six luxurious rooms each retaining its charm of the yesteryears.

Just 55 miles west of London, Brightwell Manor is only a 90 minutes drive away from central London and the Houses of Parliament.
