govt-extends-recalibration-programme-till-dec-this-year

KUALA LUMPUR — The government has agreed to extend the undocumented migrant recalibration programme until end of this year, said Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail.

The decision was made today during the foreign workers management special meeting chaired by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

The programme was meant for foreign workers who are already in the country and do not possess full documents and they could either pay the compound and continue working or choose to return to their country of origin, said Saifuddin.

“We find that this programme is able to provide work opportunities to foreign workers who are already here in this country,” he said in a press conference at Perdana Putra.

In previous implementation, which went on until Dec 31, 2022, saw more than 410,000 undocumented immigrants signed up for the programme.

He added by doing this programme a revenue for the government and solution to fill up foreign worker shortage can be done.

The recalibration programme regularises undocumented migrants as foreign workers who could be employed by eligible employers.

Also, the programme allows undocumented migrants to voluntarily return home if they meet certain conditions set by the authorities.

Saifuddin also pointed out that these relaxed conditions were only a temporary measure to fulfil the country’s foreign workers needs.

He was joined by Human Resources Minister V. Sivakumar.
