As the Nashville-raised son of the late great songwriter John Prine, Tommy Prine was perhaps destined to be a musician. But the climb was neither smooth nor swift, and his own lyricism remained humming under the surface for years before the recording of his debut album, This Far South, which will be released June 23. Its namesake song is available today, and Prine, twenty-eight, recently stopped by the Garden & Gun office to perform it live.
“I found my rock bottom and tried to escape it several times, ultimately finding the courage to see it through to the other side,” Prine remarked during the performance, a four-song set that will be fully released in June as part of G&G’s Back Porch Sessions. “There were several years where I felt without purpose…spent all my time partying and just existing. I found myself at a fork in the road and chose the better path, and in that moment, I swore I would never be ‘this far south’ again.”
The future looks bright indeed: After opening for Tyler Childers in a sold-out London tour and being named one of Amazon Music’s 2023 Breakthrough Artists to Watch, he’s set to embark on his own pre-album tour. A full list of tour dates, including the rest of his March residency shows at Nashville’s The Basement, can be found at tommyprine.com/tour.
