Air New Zealand has been exceptionally busy over the last week, doing all it can to support customers, staff and communities impacted by Cyclone Gabrielle. With nine daily flights to Gisborne and up to 18 services a day to Napier, the airline continues to provide a much-needed lifeline to residents in the Napier and Gisborne regions.

The airline added fare flexibility for Gisborne and Napier flights extends to customers as an ongoing special assistance team providing support to impacted staff. Air New Zealand’s Chief Customer and Sales Officer Leanne Geraghty said the airline has been resuming turboprop operations to and from Napier and Gisborne.

On Wednesday, in coordination with government agencies, we deployed a special assistance flight, carrying communication support, emergency supplies and airport operational staff into Gisborne,” Geraghty said. “With the help of support teams on the flight, we worked closely with the relevant authorities and local airport to assess and secure the reopening of Gisborne airport.”

The flexibility extends to customers travelling between 17 February and 26 February 2023. Customers have until 5 March 2023 to change their flight date without a change or service fee. Those who booked through a travel agency or third-party online agent should contact them directly about any changes.

“We’re immensely grateful that all our staff are accounted for; however, we know that even though they are safe, some have experienced significant losses,” Geraghty detailed. “To our staff on the SAT team who are providing our impacted colleagues with invaluable support during this difficult time, thank you. This is a huge part of how we demonstrate manaaki for one another.”
