When Room Service Means Masterchefs and Mixologists

Hotels are bringing restaurant service and bar vibes into your suite. So you can drink, social-distance and forget about the dishes. By Jeninne Lee-St. John

WITH THE VARIOUS MOVING-TARGET CURFEWS, restaurant rules, social-distancing requirements and alcohol regulations associated with Covid, it can feel like an effort to just go out to dinner these days. But, oh, aren’t we all sick of ordering in at home, too? You’ve got to plate everything yourself, clean up after, maybe reheat midway, and there’s all that awful plastic.

Happily, some restaurants have figured out a way to make giving them your presence worth your time — and that’s by taking more of it. Move into some hotel suites for the night, and you can get the full white-tablecloth dining extravaganza from their name-brand kitchens (as opposed to those more pedestrian room service menus) complete with sommelier service that mightn’t be allowed in public during a booze ban.

The Covid crisis has forced everyone to get nimbler, and that’s obviously gone for hotels in myriad ways. In the past, most wouldn’t have dreamed of letting you order fare from their signature restaurants outside of their carefully designed dining rooms. But these days they’d clearly rather switch up the ambience than pass up your business.

Avani+ Riverside Bangkok is taking its razzle-dazzle-me rooftop restobar SEEN down a notch, to their newly christened “Hush Hush Suite.” If you’re thinking a romantic (maybe even role-playing? Shhhh…) tête-à-tête, that’s a definite possibility. The staff will cue up the soft music, scatter some flowers and serve you all the champers you can drink with your multi-course meal. Not to worry: they’ll scurry off when it’s time to climb in the riverview tub.

But SEEN’s also known for its vivacious party vibe, and you can conjure that in your 138-square-meter suite, too. Invite up to nine other pals over, and pump up the speakers while the bar’s super friendly mixologist Pattanarak “Tos” Tesnate blends a bevvy of the beverages of your choosing. Word of advice: the old fashioned and gin fizz are exceptionally (enticingly) strong.

All packages come with your pick of SEEN’s Portuguese-Brazilian dinner menu (the pan-fried sea bream is a must), free-flow drinks, and your floor-to-ceiling views over the Chao Phraya that twinkle at night and serve up a red-hot sunset at daybreak — just in time for your breakfast in bed.

In Bangkok, rumors abound of the in-room-dining delights you can wrangle under-the-table from some of the coolest hotel bars and the fanciest five-stars. Most are offered on-demand to guests in the know. So call up your favorite accom and see if their chefs and somms are down. Just be hush-hush about it.

seenrooftopbangkok.com; prices from Bt2,555 per person (for a group of four) inclusive of dinner, free-flow beverages and an overnight stay in a two- or three-bedroom suite; email reservation@seenrooftopbangkok.com or call +66 2 431 9120.
