This Hotel Thinks Your Idea of Fun Might Be a 15-Day Quarantine Staycation

Thailand requires all inbound travelers to do a COVID-19 quarantine for a couple of weeks. In a city swimming in staycations, will Bangkokians volunteer for a luxe lock-in? By David Ngo

MÖVENPICK BDMS WELLNESS RESORT BANGKOK was founded as a luxe, tropical sanatorium, where guests could stay in plush rooms, seek treatment from in-house doctors, eat gourmet fare in sunlit dining rooms and take to the gardens for their daily constitutionals. Oh-so-old-world-European conceptions of healthcare right in the middle of Bangkok. It was a long-overdue stroke of genius for a city long known as a medical-tourism hub.

Little wonder that the hotel was the first approved alternative state quarantine (ASQ) property in Thailand, which requires all inbound travelers from abroad to go straight to a two-week quarantine upon landing.

Now, as the country is in a state of suspension thanks to a month-long mini-wave of reported COVID-19 cases, Mövenpick BDMS has opened its quarantine program to anyone looking for some serious me time. The package includes a 15-night stay with full board, daily health monitoring with care from nurses on site and doctors at Bangkok Hospital using their on-demand medical exam service, two COVID-19 tests, and immunity-boosting dietary supplements.

For meals you can choose among 150 or so dishes on a regularly rotating menu. Roomwise, the options go from the 42-square-meter Superior rooms on up to the 164-square-meter Presidential or Royal suites. All have balconies, bathtubs, sleep-therapy speakers, yoga mats, Smart TVs and access to the Paragon Chat & Shop @ASQ app that offers retail therapy with instant gratification — all purchases from Siam Paragon mall are delivered same day.

The main targets of this voluntary quarantine may be Thai nationals and locally based expats who want to avoid being exposed to COVID-19, think they may have been exposed, or are recovering from it, and are looking for peace of mind. But we’re thinking it might be just as appealing to those who just want to get away from the house full of kids and “work from home” for a (long) while in peace.
