These healthier granola options are the perfect way to kickstart your day

By theory, granola should have all the workings of the ultimate healthy breakfast and snack option.

As a nutrient-dense food, a serving of granola every morning can do plenty of good for fitness enthusiasts who want a fast, nutritious option to fuel their days with. The toasted amalgamation of rolled oats, nuts, seeds, spices, and nut butters have been proven to be rich in protein (an essential building block for muscle growth), fibre (to keep you feeling satiated throughout the day) as well as vitamins and minerals.

The benefits of eating granola can also range from improving blood pressure and gut health to incorporating antioxidants into your daily diet.

Unfortunately, granola has gotten an increasingly bad rep over the years for being packed with added fats and sugars. As with many mass-produced foods these days, unhealthy fats are added to help with the toasting process and add flavour, which adds excess calories to the mix.

To make it more palatable, sugar is also excessively added, so much so that some have nearly 20g (more than one tablespoon) of sugar in a single serving. Ingredients like chocolate chips, honey, and dried fruit with added sugar are also the ones to avoid if you want to get the most out of your granola — and we’re not just talking about unwanted weight.

But not all granola were made the same, and healthier (and tastier) options still exist if you look hard enough. Here are some of the best ones we love to supercharge our mornings with.

1

Julian Bakery Pro Granola

This vegan granola checks all the boxes, especially if you’re looking to pack on the muscle without the added sugar. Instead of the usual sweeteners, this option uses organic stevia and monk fruit extract to keep the calorie and sugar count low. The paleo- and keto-friendly mix also contains pea protein isolate, organic pumpkin, chia, and sesame seeds to amp up protein (12g per serving) and fibre, with added prebiotics to keep your gut health in top shape.

Purely Elizabeth Probiotic Gluten Free Granola, Chocolate Sea Salt,

This granola might contain all the tasty stuff — think fair-trade dark chocolate chunks and creamy peanut butter — but also comes mixed with ancient grains like quinoa and amaranth, as well as superfood seeds to make for a nutritious, salty-sweet treat. The crunchy clusters are then naturally sweetened with coconut sugar,  and dusted with cinnamon. This might not be a stellar option for those looking for a protein kick, but will do its job as a satisfying but healthy mid-afternoon treat.

Livlo Keto Granola in Cinnamon Almond Pecan

The low-carb lifestyle isn’t exactly the best for when you need a snack; you either sacrifice your goals or settle for a tasteless, low-carb option. Livlo is trying to change that with its Keto Granola, which provides a hearty mix of nuts and seeds that’s sweetened with keto-friendly erythritol and monk fruit extract. This gluten-free choice is chockfull of vitamins and minerals, and provides enough fibre and protein to get you through your morning.
