To commemorate her 50th birthday, the Goop founder shares with Vogue her learnings and observations in the wellness space.

To celebrate her 50th birthday, Gwyneth Paltrow posts a nude photo of herself painted in gold, shot by photographer Andrew Yee. In a conversation with Vogue, the former model and Goop founder reflected on the previous decades in and outside the spotlight. 

When asked about her thoughts on the relationship between beauty and age and self-appreciation, the Iron Man actress says that capitalism makes women feel less beautiful as they age.

“I don’t relate to a 26-year-old model. I don’t want her life. I don’t want her face. I don’t want her experience. I’ve earned my life. I’ve earned my wrinkles,” the mother of two tells Vogue.

“Maybe it’s because I have wrinkles and I’m almost 50 years old, but I’ve really recalibrated the way that I look at that stuff, ” Paltrow shares with the publication. “I don’t relate to a 26-year-old model. I don’t want her life. I don’t want her face. I don’t want her experience. I’ve earned my life. I’ve earned my wrinkles.”

The mother of two adds that after going through life’s peaks and troughs, “there’s a sweetness that starts to emerge from that, from having lived, from being wise, from being humble, from loving and losing and all of this stuff.”

As someone in the wellness space (Goop curates and creates wellness products from style and beauty to food and home), Paltrow notices the difference of today’s young women into skincare, which was nothing like herself.

“When I was my daughter’s age, I just washed my face with water and a bar of soap. I had no idea about skin care and routines. It wasn’t really in the culture,” she continues. “I was lucky to not have acne when I was a teenager, so I just never did anything.”

However, she notes that her 18-year-old daughter, Apple, is one to curate her routine. Especially in the current Instagram age, more brands and products have the opportunity to creatively market their claims. On what she feels is her purpose in life, unlike some people, Paltrow doesn’t “ruminate” on it. But as a founder, she’s always grateful when a customer thanks her for recommendations or advocating for a healthy lifestyle. 

“I think it’s always evolving, what my purpose is. I honestly don’t know if I’ll know until I’m on my deathbed,” Paltrow shares. So I just follow my instincts and kind of keep going along.”
