The Queen has become a great-grandmother for the ninth time, following the arrival of the first child of her granddaughter Princess Eugenie and her husband of over two years, Jack Brooksbank.

A statement from Buckingham Palace confirmed the happy news, writing: ‘Her Royal Highness Princess Eugenie was safely delivered of a son today, 9th February 2021, at 0855hrs at The Portland Hospital. Jack Brooksbank was present. The baby weighs 8lbs 1oz.

‘The Queen, The Duke of Edinburgh, The Duke of York, Sarah, Duchess of York, and Mr and Mrs George Brooksbank have been informed and are delighted with the news.

‘This is Princess Eugenie and Jack Brooksbank’s first child, The Duke of York and Sarah, Duchess of York’s first grandchild, and the ninth great-grandchild for The Queen and The Duke of Edinburgh. Her Royal Highness and her child are both doing well.’

Eugenie followed the announcement with a sweet picture uploaded to her official Instagram account, showing her and Jack holding a tiny hand, and with a few blue hearts in the caption.

The new baby is 11th in line to the throne, behind Prince Charles, the Duke of Cambridge, Prince George, Princess Charlotte, Prince Louis, the Duke of Sussex, Archie Mountbatten-Windsor, the Duke of York, Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie.

The couple first announced their new arrival in September of last year, with the Palace releasing the following statement: ‘Her Royal Highness Princess Eugenie and Mr Jack Brooksbank are very pleased to announce that they are expecting a baby in early 2021,’ Buckingham Palace said in a statement. ‘The Duke of York and Sarah, Duchess of York, Mr and Mrs George Brooksbank, The Queen and The Duke of Edinburgh are delighted with the news.’

The couple were married on 12 October 2018 at St George’s Chapel – the same venue that her cousin the Duke of Sussex chose for his wedding to Meghan Markle in May of the same year. The bride wore a stunning Peter Pilotto gown and emerald tiara borrowed from her grandmother, the Queen.

Meanwhile her elder sister, Princess Beatrice married her Italian beau Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi in a secret wedding at Windsor last July, with a handful of close family in attendance due to the pandemic restrictions. She borrowed a vintage Norman Hartnell gown from the Queen for the occasion, as well as Her Majesty’s own wedding day tiara, the Queen Mary Fringe Tiara.

It’s not the only royal baby due this year – with Eugenie’s cousin Zara Tindall also expecting a newborn before the summer – her third child with former rugby star Mike Tindall.
