There’s no documentation proving the former Queen of France’s purchase or ownership of the instruments. However, Aguettes claims she gifted musical instruments to those close to her. 

French auction house Aguttes is auctioning a “Trianon guitar” believed to have belonged to Marie Antoinette. The instrument, shaped as an “en bâteau,” was from the late 18th century and was created by Jacques-Philippe Michelot.

According to Aguettes, the piece, made in Paris, was passed by inheritance and preserved to this day by descendants. It’s crafted with fruitwood with ivory and ebony fillers and has an openwork ivory rosette representing two doves “embracing in a temple of love.”

Per the auction house, the Queen gave this particular guitar to the Marquise de La Rochelambert-Thévalles.

 “This guitar [is] exquisite both aesthetically and technically,” Grégoire de Thoury, Aguttes’ head of department and guitar specialist, told CNN. “[It’s]a treasure of refinement.”

Per the auction house, the Queen gave this particular guitar to the Marquise de La Rochelambert-Thévalles. The lot is now open for bids and is expected to fetch up to $84,000.
