How to master minimalist dressing like Kendall Jenner

It’s a refreshing sight: one of the world’s biggest style icons, wearing an outfit that doesn’t shout or shock.

That was how Kendall Jenner has recently appeared on the streets of New York. Ditching her Instagram girl style that is usually limited to a pair of jeans and a trendy top, the model and tequila brand owner is now sticking to another set of basics. Think a plain white tee, a crisp, button-down shirt, or a pair of black trousers.

These are the kind of classic pieces you may already have; the only difference is that Jenner’s clothes cost at least a thousand dollars a piece and were designed by Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen. In fact, Jenner has lately made a point of wearing “The Row head to toe”, as she now captions her outfit snaps on Instagram. She’s not the only one: Rosie Huntington-Whiteley wore the same menswear-inspired outfit as Jenner this month, on the same day that rock band HAIM showed up to the Brit Awards in looks from The Row’s Spring/Summer 2021 collection.

The Olsen twins’ simple, yet impeccably-made clothes are very much in the moment. When fashion was disrupted by the pandemic, designers responded with a minimalist vision. Miuccia Prada and Raf Simons made their collaborative debut with monochromatic ensembles of boxy tops, straight pants and nylon coats that looked merely like swathes of nylon. Hermes‘ womenswear collection was just as straightforward, offering relaxed separates that would never lose their purpose in your wardrobe.

These palette-cleansing pieces are a natural reaction to what’s happening around the world, offering simplicity in the face of chaos. And they are comfortable, too, much like the loungewear styles we’ve been wearing at home. In a sense, Jenner’s style is still trendy, even though that now calls for timelessness.

That also means that her outfits are easy to replicate, even without burning a hole in your pocket. Read on below to see the pared-back pieces that will elevate your everyday wardrobe.

Like The Row’s Big Sisea shirt that Jenner loves so much, this Missguided shirt is made of crisp poplin and features a relaxed, oversized fit. The buttons are also covered by a placket, leaving little to distract the eye from the strong shape that this staple piece presents.

The Olsen twins started their fashion brand after a futile search for the perfect T-shirt. Now they’ve made one themselves. As Jenner shows us, it has a relaxed, unisex fit and is cut from soft, cotton-jersey. In the spirit of borrowing from the boys, as The Row’s designs often do, we’ve found the perfect alternative in this plain Topman tee.

True to The Row’s ’90s-inspired trousers, these Ganni pants are soft, roomy and high-waisted. The pair is cut from structured chino fabric, giving it a neat, elegant appearance. In line with Jenner’s styling, we recommend replacing the belt with the one below. The next time you return to the office, let everyone know you mean business with these big girl pants.

When it comes to minimalist dressing, it’s all in the details. One key accessory that has stood out from Jenner’s outfits is a slim, buckled leather belt. No flashy logo, no fancy embellishments. You’ll find this one pretty useful for your new collection of neutral-hued trousers.

Speaking of neutrals, it’s a great time to go beige if you’d like to break the cycle of wearing all black or all white. This pair is cut from wool like many of The Row’s tailored trousers, but is priced more affordably considering their craftsmanship. The crease on the front of these narrow pants also help to elongate your legs, which is great because most of us aren’t born with the runway-ready pair that Jenner has.

Steve Jobs, who was a minimalist himself, showed us how effective a simple black turtleneck could be. It’s for that reason that the piece appears in many of The Row’s collections, as well as Kendall Jenner’s wardrobe. This one is suited for Singapore as it’s made from lightweight cotton jersey, so you won’t have to pay in sweat for what you want to achieve in style.

Emulating the same ‘90s-inspired minimalism that has lately inspired Jenner, these low-heeled sandals are the best shoes to slip on to complete your look. Made in Italy, this pair features a strappy design and a square toe — more ’90s markers. They’re also extremely comfortable thanks to their padded insoles and block heels.
