From Bridgerton to The Dig, Netflix is on quite the winning streak when it comes to producing its own period dramas. And now the streaming platform is adding another major project to its roster, having recently announced that Emma Corrin will star in a new adaptation of Lady Chatterley’s Lover.

Fresh from her star-making success as a young Princess Diana in Season 4 of The Crown, followed by her West End debut in the buzzy Anna X, 25-year-old Corrin is surfing quite the career wave. So it comes as no surprise that she’s scooped up another major lead, with Netflix having confirmed her casting as Lady Chatterley last month, in what they dubbed a ‘female-focused re-telling of a classic’.

Downton Abbey: A New Era – name of hotly-anticipated film sequel finally unveiled

Corrin will be co-starring alongside Jack O’Connell (known for his breakout role in Skins and subsequent hits like Unbroken and Godless), and relative newcomer Matthew Duckett (who recently played Loyal in The Royal National Theatre’s production of Tartuffe), for the joint venture between Sony’s 3000 Pictures and Netflix. Netflix relates that the adaptation ‘will be the first film to be produced under the new partnership where Sony Pictures will offer Netflix a first look at any films it intends to make for streaming.’

There are some exciting names behind the camera too, with French actress, producer and director Laure de Clermont-Tonnerre directing (following on from respected projects like The Mustang and Mrs America), while Academy Award-nominee David Magee (of Finding Neverland and Life of Pi fame) will adapt the screenplay from DH Lawrence’s famous – or rather infamous – novel.

Originally published in Italy in 1928, and in France the following year, Lawrence’s book was deemed so scandalous that an unexpurgated edition wasn’t widely published in the UK until 1960 – and even then, it prompted a watershed obscenity trial against Penguin Books. The erotic romance novel follows the story of the aristocratic Lady Chatterley, who finds her sexual desires awakened by an affair with the gamekeeper on her husband’s country estate. Much drama and scandal ensues, as Lady Chatterley vows to defy societal conventions in pursuit of love and happiness.

What will happen in Season 5 of The Crown?

The book has been adapted for the screen on a number of occasions in the past, most recently in 2015, for a BBC television film that starred Holliday Grainger, Richard Madden and James Norton.

While no release date has been announced for the new Netflix version as yet, principal photography is due to begin in the UK this autumn.
