Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy and JFK Jr’s romance is subject of new Ryan Murphy show
With their tanned, toned limbs, impeccable style and sweet love story, Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy and JFK Jr were one of the It couples of 1990s New York society. From their whirlwind courtship to their tragic death, theirs is a story that dominated the headlines.
Now, their romance is set to get the Ryan Murphy treatment, as the writer, director and producer announced that his latest project will be a new anthology series, American Love Story, with the first iteration focussing on the glamorous but doomed lovers.
Bessette met the eldest son of JFK and Jackie Kennedy Onassis in 1992, when she was working for Calvin Klein, and he was dating the actress Daryl Hannah. They began dating in 1994, became engaged in 1995 and were married in 1996, with the bride wearing a much lauded dress by the then little known designer, Narciso Rodriguez.
In the years following their wedding, media interest in the couple intensified, and was reportedly difficult to handle. The series may focus on the rumours that they were discussing divorce, and that Bessette-Kennedy did not get on with her sister-in-law, Caroline.
On 16 July 1999, the couple were killed in a plane crash during a flight to Martha’s Vineyard that he was piloting, with Bessette-Kennedy’s elder sister Lauren also dying in the accident.
If anything, the couple’s myth has intensified since their deaths, with Gone Girl director David Fincher reportedly instructing actress Rosamund Pike to base her character Amy Dunne on Bessette-Kennedy in the thriller, saying: ‘She crafted herself, she re-invented herself, and invented that persona. That’s where I began.’
Murphy is known for bringing to life some of the biggest and most dramatic events of the last century, previously focussing on the OJ Simpson trial and the assassination of Gianni Versace for his series American Crime Story, as well as the infamous fall-out between Hollywood stars Joan Crawford and Bette Davis in Feud.
Also coming soon from Murphy is American Crime Story: Impeachment which will focus on the Bill Clinton-Monica Lewinsky scandal of the 1990s, as well as American Sports Story, which will centre on the life and death of Aaron Hernandez, a rising football star who took his own life after being convicted of murder.
