LANSING – Lansing police shot and killed a person shortly after 5 p.m. on the city’s south side, officials said at a press conference Thursday night.
A section of Aurelius Road between Cavanaugh and Jolly roads was closed because of the incident.
Lansing Police Chief Ellery Sosebee released few details, but said at a press briefing in the parking lot of a convenience store that Lansing officers responded to a complaint of shots fired about 5 p.m. in the 2000 block of Irene, a side street off of Aurelius north of Jolly.
Officers who arrived at the scene called for backup, and Michigan State Police officers who were in the area also responded, Sosebee said.
He said officers found a suspect with a gun and police shot that person, who was pronounced dead at the scene.
A handgun was recovered at the scene and Lansing Fire Department personnel assisted at the scene.
Sosebee did not release a gender, age or hometown for the person who was killed. He also did not say how many Lansing police officers fired their weapons or whether any state police troopers discharged their firearms.
Michigan State Police are investigating the shooting, Michigan State Police Public Information Officer Lt. Rene Gonzalez said.
Earlier Thursday evening, Lansing police in a post on Twitter said an “officer-involved shooting” happened in the 4500 block of Aurelius. They urged people to avoid what they called an active scene.
The incident is the second shooting involving a police officer in the Lansing area this year. On Tuesday, a Bath Township sergeant fatally shot a man in a mobile home park.
